Toadman Interactive has confirmed the name of the prequel to 2000’s IGI and the game is now officially called I.G.I. Origins.
Interestingly enough, in the eight generation of consoles we didn’t get as much as stealth shooter games (and stealth titles in general) as we used to, but thanks to developers of 2017’s tactical first-person shooter Rising Storm 2: Vietnam it seems things are about to change. Not too long ago, Antimatter Games officially announced that they have plans to bring the classic IGI series back to life and now the prequel to 2000’s I.G.I and 2003’s Project I.G.I. 2 has an official name: I.G.I. Origins.
According to Robin Flodin as the CEO of Toadman Interactive, the teams at both Toadman and Antimatter has fond memories of playing the original games back in the day and their main plan with this prequel is to take the franchise to the next level, and considering the previous games of Antimatter Games, I.G.I. Origins seems a perfect fit for them.
As mentioned before, I.G.I. Origins is going to be a first-person stealth shooter and a prequel to 2000’s Project IGI and the studio wants to create the same stealth experience that the franchise is known for. In I.G.I. Origins players are encouraged to think their way in and shoot their way out in different enemy camps available in the game. I.G.I. Origins offers a spy fantasy world of gadgets and weapons against and lets players to unravel a mystery that threatens to plunge the world into a new era of nuclear annihilation, so you can look forward to a classic addition to the stealth shooter genre with new take on certain gameplay elements to present an enjoyable experience both for fans of the original and new players.
The game is set in the year 1980 and players take the control of an anonymous character with the code name “Regent” and according to what Toadman Interactive has shared lately, he is an agent in the service of MI6 (UK’s foreign intelligence service) on active duty and players are tasked to undertake a series of missions across the world in which Regent finds more about the origins of the Insitute of Geotactical Intelligence (aka I.G.I), this also represents where the name of the game comes from. The developers also confirmed that I.G.I. Origins keeps the first person shooting/stealth mechanics that fans of the series are familiar with and it also adds different mechanics to still fresh and relevant for the current generation of consoles. You can watch the announcement trailer for the prequel to 2000’s I.G.I below.
I.G.I. Origins is scheduled to release on PS4, Xbox One and PC (via Steam) sometime in 2021. Due to the fact that the game launches in 2021, there is a good chance that we get to play I.G.I. Origins on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Scarlett as well, but as of now Toadman Interactive has not confirmed anything in that regard. Stay tuned for more and follow us on Twitter.
