Hermen Hulst of Guerrilla Games is now the head of PlayStation’s Worldwide Studios.
Guerrilla Games managing director and co-founder, Hermen Hulst is now officially responsible for all the 14 internal PlayStation development teams across the globe.
Shuhei Yoshida who had the role since 2008 will step down to become the head of a new initiative focused on looking after external, smaller independent studios. Shawn Layden, the chairman of Worldwide Studios also left Sony a month back. These changes are part of Sony’s preparation and restructuring for the announcement and launch of PlayStation 5 next year.
Hermen Hulst has been the main guy of Guerrilla Games in recent years leading the development of Killzone series, Horizon Zero Dawn, and recently helping Kojima Productions in making Death Stranding. Hulst also appeared as a Prepper in Kojima’s newest game.
Jim Ryan, CEO, and the president of PlayStation announced the news by saying that Hulst’s experience and passion will empower creative talents to build great experiences.
“Hermen is one of the most effective and well-respected leaders in the video game industry. He is a passionate advocate for the teams he leads and understands how to empower creative talent to build great experiences. I have no doubt Hermen can lead our teams to deliver compelling and diverse experiences at a steady cadence.”
Angie Smets, Jan-Bart van Beek, and Michiel van der Leeuw will be the joint heads of Guerrilla Games from now on. Hulst also praised the talent and ambitious ideas present within the network of PlayStation studios across the globe.
“I have worked closely with PlayStation and the entire Worldwide Studios family since 2001, and I have the utmost respect and admiration for the creative talent and ambitious ideas within the network of studios across the US, Europe, and Japan.”
We’ve already seen Hermen Hulst on stages like E3 and he seems like he knows what he’s doing. On paper, this looks like a great move and hopefully, he will continue the philosophy of PlayStation going forward as well.
