With its all top-class multiplayer games, 2019 is over, however, the new year has begun with so many anticipated promising titles in different flavors coming to let us drown in, and probably, add them into the 2020’s Hall of Fame as some of the memorable experiences of the year next time we reach Christmas.
Be rest assured that this isn’t the most descriptive list about the next year’s multiplayer games, but we did try to bring you the one with the most anticipated titles in it. With just a little glimpse, if none of the games below falls short after launch, it seems 2020 is going to be a monumental year for all the multiplayer fans. Enough of hyping for what’s coming; let’s just jump in.
20. Crusader Kings 3
Release Date: 2020 Platforms: PC
The follow-up to 2012’s Crusader Kings 2 will be arriving in 2020 while the team behind it has promised a more easy-to-drop-in co-operative multiplayer for the game. Crusader Kings 3 is aimed to push the boundaries for the politics-focused strategy games and raise the bar for the diversity of gameplay and actions that a player can take in various situations.
Not many details have been shared on what exactly the multiplayer part is going to include in Crusader Kings 3, but the development team has confirmed that you can start a co-op dynasty at the beginning of the game. The base of multiplayer will be similar to the previous version, but there will be some new quality-of-life improvements to make the online experience better than the past. Crusader Kings 3 is set to be released in 2020.
19. Minecraft Dungeons
Release Date: April 2020 Platform: Xbox One and PC
Unlike what you may know of Minecraft so far, Minecraft Dungeons is only happening in its universe with a way different gameplay. The new Minecraft is actually a dungeon crawling game in which you’re going to hunt treasures on your own or with your companions in dangerous monster-filled areas. All the dungeons and the enemies within will be procedurally generated, which makes it highly replayable.
The game will be featuring a huge amount of various weapons and a widely detailed customization system while supporting up to 4-player co-op mode. You can jump in Dungeons in April 2020.
18. Chivalry 2
Release Date: 2020 Platform: PC
If you have any idea of what Mordhau is, the name Chivalry would make sense to you. After all, it was the Chivalry franchise that brought the medieval combat simulation into the circle of attention almost 7 years ago. Now that the series is making an anticipated comeback, it already has a well-growing competitor out there. That’s why, we need Chivalry 2 to be much better than Mordhau, rather than being a revolutionary sequel to the original game.
According to the development team, Chivalry 2 is a reimagination of the first game with many improvements. First of all, the game is aiming 64-player matches instead of the previous 24-player maps. Simulating the medieval wars’ atmosphere has been the main focus of the developer from scratch and nailing that milestone requires some meaningful improvements in the combat system and the scale of the game.
Thanks to more fluent combats and redesigned animations, you will be experiencing a realistic hand-to-hand battle in Chivalry 2, providing you more freedom to find your own fighting style, while having an eye on your class limitations. Riding horses is the brand new ability available in Chivalry 2 in order to make it easier to reach the enemy positions in Team Objectives’ large scale maps; a multiplayer mode that will be featuring cinematic narratives and be taken place in several stages.
17. Predator: Hunting Grounds
Release Date: Apr 24, 2020 Platforms: PS4 and PC
The team behind Friday The 13th: The Game, has already started another new movie-inspired project on the same genre as the previous one, but more brutal and more action-packed. Predator: Hunting Grounds is a 4v1 multiplayer title, set in the deadly woods of Predator territory, where you can choose to hunt down the poor soldiers by the means of Predator’s cutting-edge weapons or team-up with your friends as a military group to get your objectives done with a flawless strategy in mind and then reach the way out without making any noises. Don’t try to kill the inhuman guy, way before you take an action, you’re dead.
Both Predator and soldier will be featuring different classes that grant various abilities to the character. However, the weapons available for soldiers might look like a toy compared to what Predator holds in hand. The loadout and characters all will be customizable, as you progress in the game and get your rank higher. The game will be available for PS4 and PC on April 24. The PC version is exclusive to Epic Games Store.
16. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Release Date: Mar 20, 2020 Platform: Switch
Eight years after New Leaf, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is going to be the first game in the series that will be launching on Nintendo Switch. An open-ended and open-world game, allowing each player to create his own character and start living on his own island in a real-life time-zone and season. You will be free to do a lot of various activities to grow the island, earn more items, and customize everything available in the game.
When it comes to multiplayer, New Horizons supports 4-player local co-op on a single Switch, in which, all players will be living in a single island, helping each other out to grow their residential area faster. On the other hand, the online multiplayer mode will allow up to 8 players to gather around and visit each other’s islands, though they can’t camp on your island. Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be hitting the stores on March 20.
15. CrossFire X
Release Date: 2020 Platform: Xbox One
It might sound a bit odd for you but CrossFire was one of the top-grossing games of 2018 along with titles like Fortnite and League of Legends. The game made a name for itself in 2014 as it earned enough revenue to be the year’s most profitable game, thanks to its over 660 million players in Asia.
After such a huge success, the team behind CrossFire started to expand its world and work on a sequel for it. CrossFire X, which is also called CrossFire 2, is now being developed under the nose of both Smilegate and Remedy. With the first team building up the multiplayer part, and the second studio cultivating the narrative-driven single-player mode of the game.
CrossFire X is mostly known as Counter-Strike for the Asian countries, though it features many different modes. As a part of Global Risk or Black List, you will jump in 8v8 battles to complete the objectives and bring victory for your side. CrossFire X will hit Xbox One in 2020, while there’s no release date for the PS4 version. Last but not least, it will be free to play.
14. Zombie Army 4: Dead War
Release Date: Feb 4, 2020 Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, and PC
Through the last generation and even earlier than that, everything that Rebellion made was based upon the core of its Sniper Elite series, and the policy is still going on. Their new project, Zombie Army 4: Dead War, is another spin-off for the Sniper Elite franchise with similar mechanics but a big overhaul. This time around, you will be able to go through the campaign mode with a drop-in/drop-out co-op supporting up to 4 players. While you’re busy with wiping out zombies, you’ll pass through different locations in Italy and beyond.
As you might guess, a campaign isn’t the only thing you’ll get. An improved and hardcorized Horde mode will also be available to show you what will happen if you underestimate Nazi-powered zombies.
A detailed customization room accompanied by a deep and well-realized progression system is what Rebellion has promised to bring in Zombie Army 4: Dead War. The game will be hitting PS4, Xbox One and PC on February 4 in 2020.
13. Marvel’s Avengers
Release Date: May 15, 2020 Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, Stadia, and PC
After the huge backlash over the reveal trailer of Marvel’s Avengers, the game is now living on the edge. Crystal Dynamics came to hype fans but the result was far away from their expectations. Despite all the critics, the character design won’t be changed but the developer is hard at work to prove the game’s potential and what it’s meant to deliver.
Marvel’s Avengers features a single-player only campaign, but according to Crystal Dynamics, there will be missions in the game supporting 4-player co-op mode, in which, you’ll choose one of the Avengers’ superheroes to get the objective done and take on the enemies. Thus far, no footage has been shared for the game’s multiplayer part, but it’s been confirmed that there will be an extensive multiplayer component. Marvel’s Avengers will be arriving on May 15.
Release Date: March 2020 Platforms: PS4 and PSVR (PC and Xbox One on a later date)
Developed by a Chinese team, Boundary is going to be a ground-breaking multiplayer first-person shooter for its fierce zero-gravity setting that will affect the whole gameplay in a never-before-seen way. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare once tried the same idea, but the simulation level in Boundary is much higher than that.
Faraway from the earth, outside of a destroyed space station, your fight begins against a bunch of other armed astronauts in 5v5 matches. Simulating the zero-gravity movements for both characters and objects is one of the main objectives for Surgical Scalpels, and according to some in-game footage, it seems they’ve nailed it flawlessly.
Boundary will be featuring all typical multiplayer modes such as Team Deathmatch, Elimination, and Domination. You’ll have fully open control on your loadout with dozens of options to upgrade the guns and add new functionalities to them. Thanks to the game’s late-gen graphics, it’s supposed to bring a seamless experience on PSVR along with PS4. Xbox One and PC versions will be arriving some time later.
Release Date: Feb 14, 2020 Platform: PS4
This one is a tricky option to be among the other multiplayer games of the year, but it does feature an online co-op mode, even if it’s about developing games and playing them together. Dreams is currently available as an early-access game, but the full version is set to arrive on February 14 in 2020.
If you’ve ever noticed some of the interesting games that have been created within Dreams, you’d better know that most of them are being developed by a team of players, with each one of them taking the responsibility for a different part of the project. Dreams’ multiplayer might fit into no available genre, but it does bring a brand new experience for those who love to give birth to their brilliant ideas.
10. Ready or Not
Release Date: Q4 2020 Platforms: PC
Ready or Not may not be as well-known as other entries of the list, but it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get hyped for it. Coming up from an indie studio as their debut, Ready or Not will be simulating what a SWAT team is dealing with in the real world. Featuring hardcore and realistic first-person shooter gameplay, you’ll play a key role in different threatening situations from big-scale robberies to breathtaking kidnapping scenarios in single-player mode. You have to plan your moves before getting into each mission and control your teammates during the operation.
On the other hand, the game will also host competitive PvP multiplayer modes as well, for which we haven’t received much information so far. However, the developer has confirmed that we can play the mission scenarios in co-op mode with real-players as teammates. Ready or Not is set to launch on an unknown date in 2020.
Release Date: Holidays 2020 Platforms: PS5 and PC
Revealed at The Game Awards 2019, Godfall is the first game so far that has been officially confirmed for PS5. The game is a third-person online action-looter experience with next-gen graphics and different character abilities. More details on Godfall are yet to be announced but the game is being developed by Counterplay Games, the team behind critically acclaimed free-to-play turn-based strategy Duelyst.
Based on the reveal trailer and a brief gameplay teaser, you are tasked to beat giant creatures in a probably 3-player co-op mode. A 75-person team is working on the game and it will be published by Gearbox on PS5 and PC in Holidays 2020.
8. Resident Evil: Resistance
Release Date: Apr 3, 2020 Platforms: PS4, Xbox One and PC
While the announcement of Resident Evil: Resistance made us disappointed about getting another remake of the series in 2020, recently it was confirmed during the last State of Play that Resistance is actually the multiplayer part for Resident Evil 3 Remake.
Unlike the previous multiplayer spin-offs from the Resident Evil series, Resistance has chosen a new way. This time around, you’re going to have a 4v1 online experience, where 4 players with different characters and loadout try to do the objectives, while a Mastermind, on the other hand, throws various enemies to fight against the player and prevent him from escaping the area. However, there will be more options available for Mastermind.
Six playable characters will be available for the Survivors side at launch, with only two available for Mastermind role. None of them include the campaign characters, but one of the masterminds is Annette Birkin whom we met in Resident Evil 2 Remake. No customization feature has been announced yet, but each character will have its own abilities. Also, there will be an in-game currency for Survivors to buy ammo or herbs during the match. Resident Evil 3 will be available on April 3rd, 2020 including Resistance.
7. Warcraft 3: Reforged
Release Date: Jan 28, 2020 Platforms: PC
Announcing a remastered version of Warcraft 3 back in BlizzCon 2018 cost a lot of BOOs for Blizzard, but the real reaction is yet to be seen after the launch.
The most notable change in Warcraft 3: Reforged is the revamped and enhanced graphics of the game. Furthermore, the campaign mode will also feature minor improvements and changes as well, while the multiplayer part will host many balance changes to deliver a much fair experience after almost 17 years.
Fortunately, all the gameplay changes will be applied to the original version as well, making it possible for players of both games to play with each other online. It’s worth noting that Reforged will include The Frozen Throne expansion and a new difficulty level for newcomers. Wait for it to launch on January 28.
6. Bleeding Edge
Release Date: Mar 24, 2020 Platforms: Xbox One and PC
Ninja Theory is currently split-up into two internal teams with one of them developing Hellblade 2: Senua’s Saga for Xbox Series X, and the other one trying to deliver Bleeding Edge as an online 4v4 melee combat game for Xbox One.
Originally announced at E3 2019, Bleeding Edge is a hero-based competitive multiplayer title in which two armies of gifted heroes will fight against each other. 12 characters will be available at launch, each one with their own weapons and movement abilities. You are free to customize and upgrade each hero of yours with the available parts and the in-game currency that you earn as you play more. Heroes have been divided into Assassin, Support, and Tank classes based on their skills and endurance against the attacks.
Bleeding Edge features a bunch of different maps and the player will be able to use available items to boost its powers or throw the enemy into the deadly locations of the map and take him down. Bleeding Edge will be coming on Xbox One and PC on March 24th.
5. Doom Eternal
Release Date: Mar 20, 2020 Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, and PC
We could have already played Doom Eternal if id Software didn’t push back the release to 2020. But anyway, now it’s also a part of the list, a big one. After all, it was the Doom series that shaped up the fast-paced first-person shooters as we know it right now.
Similar to the previous entry of the series, Doom Eternal will also feature a multiplayer part, but this time around, a brand new Battlemode that allows you to play as Slayer or demons. Set in the mode’s exclusive maps, one of the players chooses to take the role of Slayer, while two others will be playing as demons. There will be three demon characters available at launch, with two others joining them as post-launch content.
While Slayer has a wide variety of options for his weapons, each demon will have its own abilities and way of attack. They are also able to deploy AI-controlled demons to make Slayer busy for quite a bit of time.
Aside from Battlemode, Eternal features Invasion mode as well, in which real players join another player’s campaign as demons and try to kill him. Doom Eternal will be available on March 20, with the Switch version arriving sometime later.
Release Date: Summer 2020 Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, and PC
After many years, finally, People Can Fly is working on a brand new game on its own that is not related to Bulletstorm. Outriders is a story-driven 3-player co-op shooter set in a post-apocalyptic era in a place far away from the earth.
As humanity’s last hope, you and your companions step on the planet Enoch in search of a mysterious signal. While the remnants of destroyed human-made facilities raise your hope for the signal you follow, Enoch is home to deadly and gigantic creatures that leave you no option but killing them.
While you can play Outriders solely, People Can Fly offers a drop-in/drop-out co-op experience, in which you can create your own character with distinct abilities. Aside from the guns, you can use some supernatural powers against the enemies as well. Outriders is set to be launched in Summer 2020.
3. New World
Release Date: May 2020 Platforms: PC
Amazon Games’ biggest project officially got a release date at The Game Awards 2010 with a new cinematic trailer, opening up the backstory for New World.

There are many various areas in Aeternum and a lot of AI-controlled enemies and giants that you have to slay. The gameplay mechanics, progression system, and customization options are as detailed as the world is. Every path that you take, first you need to find a combat-style and master at it.
New World will be arriving in May 2020 with a closed beta version coming available in April.
2. Rainbow Six: Quarantine
Release Date: 2020 Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, and PC
With the massive success that Rainbow Six: Siege has made since its launch back in 2015, it’s not surprising to see Ubisoft branching out the series and working on new spin-offs based on the original game, and Rainbow Six: Quarantine is the first one.
Set a few years after the original game, Quarantine is a 3-player co-op tactical shooter in which the players will be fighting against a horrifying creature that we could only hear its voice during the reveal trailer. While more details on the gameplay are yet to be shared, presumably, Quarantine represents close-quarter combats in indoor maps and features Operators from Siege. According to Ubisoft, the virus-effected enemies will be unpredictable and more lethal than you would’ve imagined.
The idea for Rainbow Six: Quarantine has been shaped up after the overwhelming reception of the fans for the Outbreak event in Siege. Quarantine will be released in 2020.
1. Halo: Infinite
Release Date: Holiday 2020 Platforms: Xbox Series X and PC
When it comes to the first-person shooters and multiplayer games, few franchises come to mind as the sources of inspiration for games we play now, and Halo is one of the few. One generation after Halo 5: Guardians, a new follow-up is on the way to hit Xbox Series X in Holiday 2020 with an epic story to tell and an impressive multiplayer to drown in, you bet!
Except for two cinematic trailers, we haven’t received any significant information on Halo: Infinite yet, but recently 343 Industries confirmed the game will feature 4-player split-screen as a local multiplayer mode which is going to happen for the first time in the series. Also, the customization system of Infinite will be similar to that of Halo: Reach.
E3 2020 would likely be the event in which we would finally see the first gameplay trailer from Halo: Infinite and get to know more about its new features in the multiplayer section.
